Day-by-Day Itinerary:
Day 1: Lushoto to Shagayu Forest Reserve

From Lushoto, you’ll head towards the Shagayu Forest Reserve, passing through tea plantations and village farms. As you make your way into the forest, you’ll be immersed in a peaceful environment filled with diverse flora and fauna. This day offers plenty of opportunities to spot local wildlife and enjoy the natural beauty of the Eastern Arc Mountains.
Day 2: Shagayu Forest Reserve to Mtae
On the second day, you’ll continue your journey deeper into the Usambara Mountains, heading toward Mtae. The trail takes you through beautiful landscapes, including expansive valleys and dense forests. As you approach Mtae, you’ll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding areas, including the Great Rift Valley in the distance. Mtae itself is a small, tranquil village that provides a perfect setting to rest and reflect on the beauty of the region.
Day 3: Exploration around Mtae
The third day allows for further exploration around Mtae, where you can take a hike to Mtae Viewpoint for one of the best views in the region. From here, you can enjoy sweeping vistas of the valley below and the surrounding peaks of the Usambara Mountains. After your exploration, you’ll return to Mtae for the night, where you can engage with local communities and experience the peaceful atmosphere of this rural village.

Best Time to Trek:
The best time to trek the Lushoto to Mtae route is during the dry season, from June to October, when the weather is cooler and more comfortable for hiking. However, the route is also accessible during the rainy season (March to May), though some parts of the trail may become slippery.
