6 Day Kilimanjaro Trekking Umbwe Route
The 6-Day Kilimanjaro Trekking – Umbwe Route is the most challenging and least traveled route to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895m/19,341ft). Known for its steep and direct ascent, the Umbwe Route is best suited for experienced trekkers and adventurers seeking a true mountaineering challenge. Unlike other routes that allow gradual acclimatization, Umbwe offers a fast ascent, making it a route with a lower success rate unless trekkers are well-prepared and acclimatized beforehand.
The trek begins at Umbwe Gate (1,640m) and immediately enters dense rainforests, where climbers navigate narrow ridges and steep inclines. Within just two days, trekkers reach Barranco Camp (3,960m), merging with climbers from the Machame, Lemosho, and Shira Routes. The ascent from Barranco to Barafu Camp (4,673m) follows a demanding and exposed trail, passing iconic landmarks such as the Barranco Wall, Karanga Valley, and Stella Point before making the final midnight summit push to Uhuru Peak.
Due to its steep nature, the Umbwe Route is not recommended for beginners or those unfamiliar with high-altitude trekking. It is best suited for physically fit and highly experienced hikers who have done previous altitude treks. However, those who take on this extreme challenge will be rewarded with stunning scenery, less crowded trails, and a fast-track adventure to the Roof of Africa.
Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp
Your trek begins with a drive from Moshi to Umbwe Gate (1,650m) for registration. From here, the trail immediately begins with a steep ascent into the dense rainforest. The forest is lush and rich in vegetation, offering a peaceful yet challenging start. You will arrive at Umbwe Camp (2,850m) in the afternoon, where you will camp for the night.
Day 2: Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp
This is one of the most demanding days of the trek, as the trail continues steeply upward, gaining significant elevation. After passing through thick forest and crossing a ridge, you will arrive at the Barranco Camp (3,960m). Along the way, the Barranco Wall becomes visible, marking the steep climb you’ll tackle in the next few days.
Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Today’s trek involves a relatively short but strenuous climb up the Barranco Wall, which is non-technical but still requires effort. After reaching the top, you will descend and then continue through rocky terrain, finally arriving at Karanga Camp (4,035m). The day’s hike offers stunning views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding landscape.
Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
The trail to Barafu Camp (4,673m) ascends through the alpine desert. The climb is steep but steady, and as you approach Barafu Camp, you will feel the colder air and thinner atmosphere. Barafu is the base camp for your summit attempt, so after arriving, you will have a light dinner and rest before preparing for the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak.
Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Your summit push begins around midnight. This will be a long and demanding day as you slowly ascend in the dark towards Stella Point (5,756m). From Stella Point, you will continue along the rim to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, you will descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp (3,100m), passing through alpine desert and moorland.
Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
The final day of your trek is a long descent through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,640m). Along the way, you will reflect on the adventure, and once you reach the gate, you will receive your summit certificate. You will then be transferred back to Moshi or Arusha, marking the end of your epic journey.
