7 Day Kilimanjaro Trekking Rongai Route
The 7-Day Kilimanjaro Trekking – Rongai Route is the only route that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. Known for its gentle slopes, remote wilderness, and low traffic, this route is an excellent choice for trekkers who prefer a quieter and less crowded climb. Unlike the southern routes, the Rongai Route is drier and offers stunning views of the Kenyan plains, making it a great option during the rainy season when other routes may be wet and muddy.
The trek begins at Rongai Gate (1,950m/6,398ft) and winds through lush rainforests and moorlands before reaching the high-altitude desert zone. Unlike the steep Umbwe or Machame routes, Rongai offers a steady ascent, allowing for better acclimatization and a higher summit success rate. The final summit push is made from Kibo Hut (4,703m) via Gilman’s Point (5,681m), before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the highest point in Africa.
After summiting, trekkers descend via the Marangu Route, allowing them to experience both sides of Kilimanjaro. The Rongai Route is ideal for those seeking a more gradual climb, fewer crowds, and a remote wilderness experience while still maximizing their chances of reaching the summit.
Day 1: Arrival in Moshi
You arrive in Moshi, Tanzania, where you’ll meet your trekking team for a briefing. This is followed by a check of your equipment and any necessary preparations for the trek. You’ll spend the night in a comfortable hotel to rest before the adventure begins.
Day 2: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp (2,600m)
After breakfast, you’ll drive to the Rongai Gate, which takes around four hours. Once there, you’ll start your trek through lush forests, rich with wildlife, such as monkeys and birds. This initial trek lasts for about 3-4 hours and ends at Simba Camp (2,600 meters), where you will camp for the night.
Day 3: Simba Camp to Second Cave (3,450m)
The hike continues as you move from Simba Camp to Second Cave (3,450 meters). The trek takes around 5-6 hours as you ascend through heath and moorland, with great views of the surrounding landscape and Kilimanjaro. You’ll camp at Second Cave and enjoy the evening surrounded by the beauty of the mountain.
Day 4: Second Cave to Kikelewa Cave (3,600m)
You’ll trek to Kikelewa Cave at 3,600 meters, which is a moderate 4-5 hour hike through scenic moorland terrain. As you ascend, you’ll pass through streams and rocky areas, and upon reaching Kikelewa Cave, you’ll set up camp and rest for the night.
Day 5: Kikelewa Cave to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m)
You’ll hike to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330 meters), which takes about 4-5 hours. The terrain becomes rockier, and you’ll be treated to stunning views of the Mawenzi Peak. After reaching Mawenzi Tarn, you’ll rest, acclimatize to the higher altitude, and prepare for the summit attempt the next day.
Day 6: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut (4,700m)
You’ll begin your summit attempt by leaving Kibo Hut (4,700 meters) around midnight. This is the longest and most challenging part of the trek, as you’ll ascend steeply through the night to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters) via Gilman’s Point. After reaching the summit, you’ll begin your descent, first to Kibo Hut for a quick rest, and then continue to Horombo Hut (3,720 meters) for the night.
Day 7: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate (1,830m)
After a well-earned rest, you’ll descend from Horombo Hut to the Marangu Gate (1,830 meters), which takes about 5-6 hours. Upon reaching the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificates, and then transfer back to Moshi for your departure. This trek is physically demanding, so proper acclimatization, hydration, and preparation are key to making it to the top.
