7 Day Kilimanjaro Trekking Machame Route
The 7-Day Kilimanjaro Trekking – Machame Route is one of the most scenic and popular trails to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895m/19,341ft). Known as the “Whiskey Route”, Machame is more challenging than Marangu but offers a higher success rate due to its superior acclimatization profile. This seven-day itinerary provides an optimal balance between gradual ascent and altitude adaptation, increasing your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
The Machame Route begins at Machame Gate (1,800m) and takes trekkers through diverse ecological zones, including lush rainforests, moorlands, alpine deserts, and glaciers. Trekkers pass by stunning landmarks such as Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, and the Barranco Wall, making this route one of the most scenic on Kilimanjaro. The challenging yet rewarding Barranco Wall climb is a highlight, offering breathtaking panoramic views.
The 7-day itinerary follows the “climb high, sleep low” principle, allowing better acclimatization by exposing trekkers to higher altitudes before descending to lower elevations for overnight stays. The summit push begins from Barafu Camp (4,673m) at midnight, with climbers trekking through the arctic zone to reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise, experiencing a once-in-a-lifetime moment on the Roof of Africa.
Unlike the Marangu Route, the Machame Route is a camping-based trek, with trekkers staying in tents at designated campsites along the way. While it requires more endurance due to its steeper and more challenging terrain, the breathtaking scenery and higher summit success rate make it a preferred choice for adventure seekers.
Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
The trek begins with a drive from Moshi or Arusha to Machame Gate (1,640m), where you complete registration. The first day’s trek takes you through dense rainforest, where you may see colobus monkeys and exotic birds. The trail gradually ascends to Machame Camp (2,850m), where you will spend your first night on the mountain.
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Leaving the rainforest, the trail becomes steeper as you enter the heather and moorland zone. You will cross rocky ridges and enjoy breathtaking views of Kibo Peak before reaching Shira Camp (3,810m) on the Shira Plateau.
Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
This is a crucial acclimatization day. You ascend to Lava Tower (4,630m), a volcanic rock formation, before descending to Barranco Camp (3,960m). The descent allows your body to adjust to the altitude, increasing your chances of reaching the summit.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Your day begins with a challenging climb up the Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical ascent offering stunning views. You then continue through rolling terrain before reaching Karanga Camp (4,035m), where you rest and acclimatize.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
The trail becomes steeper as you trek through the alpine desert to reach Barafu Camp (4,673m). This is the base camp for your summit attempt. After an early dinner, you will rest and prepare for the final ascent, which begins just before midnight.
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
You begin your summit push at midnight, trekking slowly in the freezing cold. After reaching Stella Point (5,756m), you continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement, you descend back to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for a well-deserved rest.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
The final trek takes you through lush rainforest as you descend to Mweka Gate (1,640m). Here, you receive your summit certificate and bid farewell to your trekking crew before returning to Moshi or Arusha.
