6 Day Kilimanjaro Trekking Marangu Route
The 6-Day Kilimanjaro Trekking – Marangu Route is one of the most popular and well-established routes to the Roof of Africa, offering trekkers a classic and relatively comfortable journey to the 5,895m (19,341ft) summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route”, Marangu is the only route that provides hut accommodations instead of tents, making it an attractive option for those seeking a less rugged trekking experience.
This six-day itinerary allows an extra acclimatization day, increasing the success rate for reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. The gradual ascent and well-maintained trails make it a favored route for beginners and those looking for a steady, non-technical climb. However, while Marangu is considered one of the easier routes in terms of terrain, reaching the summit is still a challenging and demanding adventure that requires determination and physical endurance.
The trek begins at Marangu Gate (1,860m) and ascends through lush rainforests, home to colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and various bird species. As you gain altitude, the landscape transitions into moorlands and alpine deserts, providing breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. The final push to Uhuru Peak begins at midnight from Kibo Hut, with trekkers ascending through the harsh arctic zone under the starlit sky, reaching the summit just in time for a spectacular sunrise over Africa.
One of the key benefits of the Marangu Route is the availability of sleeping huts at Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo Huts, providing trekkers with a bit more shelter and comfort compared to the camping-based routes. The descent follows the same trail, allowing trekkers to retrace their steps and appreciate the stunning landscapes from a different perspective.
This trek is ideal for those who prefer a structured and comfortable experience while still wanting to take on the challenge of Kilimanjaro. While it may have a slightly lower success rate compared to other routes due to less time for acclimatization, the additional day included in this itinerary significantly improves your chances of reaching the summit successfully.
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Your journey begins with a drive from Moshi or Arusha to Marangu Gate (1,870m) for registration. The trek starts through the dense rainforest, where you may see monkeys and exotic birds. The path is well-maintained, leading to Mandara Hut (2,720m), where you will spend your first night. A short walk to Maundi Crater offers beautiful views of Kenya’s Amboseli National Park.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Leaving the rainforest, the trail ascends into the moorland zone, offering stunning views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The terrain becomes drier as you make your way to Horombo Hut (3,720m), where you will rest and acclimatize.
Day 3: Acclimatization at Horombo Hut
To improve your chances of summiting, you will spend an extra day at Horombo Hut for acclimatization. You can take an optional hike to Zebra Rocks (4,020m), a unique rock formation, before returning to camp for rest and preparation for the higher altitudes ahead.
Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Today, you enter the alpine desert as you trek towards Kibo Hut (4,703m), the base camp for your summit attempt. The path becomes steeper, passing the Saddle, a barren stretch between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. You will have an early dinner and rest before beginning your midnight ascent.
Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
You start your summit push at midnight, trekking in freezing conditions under the stars. The trail is steep and challenging, leading to Gilman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim. From here, you continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, you descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut (3,720m) for the night.
Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
The final stretch takes you back through the moorland and rainforest as you descend to Marangu Gate (1,870m). Here, you will receive your summit certificate and say goodbye to your trekking crew before being transferred back to Moshi or Arusha.
