5 Days Mount Meru Trekking

Mount Meru is the second-highest mountain in Tanzania, standing at an elevation of 4,566 meters (14,980 feet). Located within Arusha National Park, it is often regarded as a great alternative to Mount Kilimanjaro for those seeking a more tranquil and less crowded trek. This mountain offers an exciting combination of wildlife, diverse ecosystems, and stunning panoramic views. Unlike Kilimanjaro, which is often the main draw for trekkers, Mount Meru provides a more intimate trekking experience, immersing adventurers in the lush, diverse landscapes of Tanzania.

The trek to the summit of Mount Meru is a 5-day adventure that takes you through lush forests, alpine meadows, and volcanic ridges. Along the way, trekkers will pass through different ecological zones, encountering diverse flora and fauna, including rare bird species, monkeys, and the possibility of spotting large mammals such as giraffes, buffaloes, and elephants.

One of the unique aspects of climbing Mount Meru is the opportunity to experience the Ngurdoto Crater, which is visible throughout much of the hike. The views from the summit of Point Lenana are awe-inspiring, offering a bird’s-eye view of the surrounding landscapes, including the nearby Mount Kilimanjaro. On clear days, trekkers can take in the beauty of the Masai Steppe, Lake Momella, and the expansive savannah below. This trek is known not only for its breathtaking views but also for its rich flora and fauna, making it a must-do for nature lovers and adventurous souls.

The route is challenging yet accessible, designed to give trekkers a chance to adjust to the altitude in a gradual manner, with well-structured rest days. While Mount Meru is a bit more technically challenging than other mountains, its lower altitude and easier terrain compared to Kilimanjaro make it an excellent option for those seeking a rewarding adventure without the more demanding conditions of higher-altitude treks.

Whether you’re looking to push your limits or simply want to experience the true beauty of Tanzania, Mount Meru offers a unique and unforgettable trekking experience. The trek combines adventure with natural beauty, providing trekkers with a chance to explore Arusha National Park‘s diverse ecosystems while enjoying a sense of peace and tranquility that you might not find on more crowded routes.

Day 1: Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Your adventure starts with a drive from Moshi or Arusha to Lemosho Gate for registration and meeting your trekking team. The hike begins through the dense rainforest, with chances to spot monkeys and exotic birds. The trail is relatively short and leads to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650m), where you will spend your first night.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Leaving the rainforest, you enter the moorland and heath zone. The trail becomes steeper as you ascend to the Shira Plateau, passing Shira 1 Camp and continuing to Shira 2 Camp (3,850m). This is a long day but provides excellent acclimatization. You will have stunning views of Kibo Peak and Mount Meru along the way.

Day 3: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
Today is crucial for acclimatization as you ascend to Lava Tower (4,630m) before descending to Barranco Camp (3,960m). The landscape shifts to alpine desert, with massive boulders and volcanic rock formations. Spending time at a higher altitude before descending helps your body adjust, improving your chances of reaching the summit.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
The day starts with a challenging but rewarding climb up the Barranco Wall. Though steep, it is non-technical and provides incredible views. The trail then undulates through valleys before reaching Karanga Camp (4,035m). This is a relatively short hike, allowing for rest and acclimatization.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
The trek continues through the alpine desert to Barafu Camp (4,673m), the base camp for the summit attempt. The barren landscape offers breathtaking views of Mawenzi Peak and Kibo. You will have an early dinner and rest, as the summit push begins around midnight.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
The summit attempt begins just after midnight, with a slow and steady climb in freezing temperatures. After reaching Stella Point (5,756m), you push on to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After taking in the incredible sunrise and capturing photos, you descend to Mweka Camp (3,100m), passing Barafu Camp along the way. This long but rewarding day marks the highlight of your trek.

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
The final stretch takes you through lush rainforest as you descend to Mweka Gate (1,640m). Here, you will receive your summit certificate and say goodbye to your trekking crew before being transferred back to Moshi or Arusha, marking the end of your incredible Kilimanjaro journey.
